California State Law mandates that all children between the ages of 6 and 18 attend school unless they are exempted by law or have graduated from high school (E.C. 48200, E.C. 48400). Parents are reminded that they are responsible to comply with this compulsory education law by enrolling students and arranging for their regular attendance. Regular school attendance is one of the most important ways for students to have a successful high school experience. Studies show a direct positive correlation between academic success and regular school attendance. Excessive absence is a major cause of academic failure.
Reporting Absences
A parent/legal guardian is asked to call the Attendance Office at 365-3391, extension 3006 or 3007, before 3:00 p.m. each day of an absence and provide the following information:
• Full name and grade of student
• Date(s) of student absence
• Name of person calling and relationship to the student
OR
Students may bring a note from the parent or guardian on the day they return to school. The note should contain the same information as requested above. Notes will ONLY be accepted at the Attendance window before school, during lunch, or after school.
OR
Parents are encouraged to provide the above information in person at the Attendance Office in the Administration building.
Students must have absences cleared within 48 hours of their return to school or the absence will be considered a “truancy.” Cases of forged notes or falsified phone calls will be referred to one of the Assistant Principals for disciplinary action. Absences will not be cleared after 2 weeks…..
EXCUSED ABSENCES
Students are considered to have an excused absence from school when he or she is sick, has a medical or dental appointment, is attending a funeral of a member of the pupil’s immediate family, or is appearing in court. Absences for almost all other reasons are considered unexcused, even if they are absences requested or approved by the pupil’s parent or guardian. Note: Parents/guardians must call or send a note to school in order to excuse absences as listed above (see “Reporting Absences”).
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
9th through 12th grade students may not have more than six days of unexcused absences per semester, per course. When nine days of unexcused absences per course are exceeded, the student WILL NOT receive credit for the course.
